On 15 August, Home Secretary David Blunkett, MP, opened a Calor Autogas pump at one of Sheffield’s busiest fuel stations, underlining the Government’s commitment to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Mr Blunkett opened the new refuelling outlet at the Law Brothers’ site and his driver was the first to refuel at the pump. In a short speech the minister commented on the importance that using cleaner-burning fuels such as Autogas can make to the environment.
Calor’s Paul Hardwick said: “Sheffield has two Air Action Zones, primarily due to the amount of nitrogen dioxide released into the atmosphere by petrol and diesel engines. Choosing to run vehicles on Autogas will have a big impact on these levels. For example, Autogas vehicles can produce up to 247 times less Oxides of Nitrogen (which react in the air to form nitrogen dioxide) than even the cleanest diesel engines.”
The Law Brothers’ fuel station in Sheffield has 2500 customers every day and has noticed a growing market for Autogas. “Since we first suggested the idea of Autogas the response has been overwhelming,” explained John Wilson, general manager at the site. “We like to keep up with new developments and have been working with Calor for some time to install the pump.”
“We have a number of fleets that regularly fill up at our site and having an Autogas pump will be a real advantage for them,” continued John. “They will now be able to run an environmentally friendly fleet knowing that they have an inner-city refuelling outlet, rather than needing to travel out to the motorways to refuel.”
With the launch of the Law Brothers refuelling site, Sheffield now has seven Autogas outlets. “With Autogas retailing at around half the cost of petrol or diesel and the big environmental benefits of the alternative fuel, there is really no reason for fleets not to consider running on it,” commented Paul Hardwick.
The opening of the Calor Autogas pump at Law Brothers in Sheffield was part of an open day highlighting the benefits of the fuel. Along with Calor, leading manufacturers Volvo were on hand to offer advice to local businesses and residents and two of Calor’s preferred converters, MSD and local company Motor Gas were demonstrating a range of cars running on Autogas.
