Everest, the leading home improvements company, is to replace its fleet of 600 vehicles with vehicles powered by Autogas from market leader calor. The fleet will use Calor Autogas from bunkered supplies at four of Everests sites in Hertford, Warrington, Milton Keynes and Perth and the rapidly growing UK network of Autogas retail sites.
Everest is currently operating 50 gas-powered Ford Transit vans, with 40 LDV vans currently in production and a further 15-20 Mercedes Sprinter vans expected to be ordered in the next few months. Everest is intending to convert the remainder of the fleet to Calor Autogas in due course. In addition, Everests parent company, the Latium Group, is considering extending the commitment to LPG to all companies within the group.
Autogas is emerging as the dominant player in the alternative fuels market as the government has reduced the duty on road fuel gases by 3p a litre and pledged to maintain this reduction until at least 2004. The fuel offers a number of environmental advantages, as well as the significant cost savings over petrol or diesel.
With Calor Autogas costing around 50% less than petrol or diesel, Everest expects to make significant savings on its fuel bills. The cost to Everest of converting to Autogas has been substantially reduced by the use of grants from the Energy Savings Trusts "Powershift" programme.
Everest fleet co-ordinator Matt Hughes commented: At Everest we believe our glazing products to be the best in the industry and they help the environment by enabling people to cut down on their use of energy. It therefore seems a natural progression that Everest should pursue a cleaner fuel policy which will also benefit the environment and provide Everest with significant cost savings.
I have spent a year researching the alternative fuels market, and have seen a wholesale change of attitude within the fleet industry. Companies and organisations up and down the country are rapidly implementing Autogas fleets to make the most of the significant benefits.
