Don't Choke Yourself With The Cost of Running a Diesel Fleet

Paul Oxford, Calor Autogas sales development manager explains the true cost of choosing a company car.

With the new company car tax due for launch in April 2002, companies and individuals are looking at ways to save money and reduce the overall cost of running a company car. Reducing tax is one way but the biggest cost, which directly affects an individual and a company’s pocket on a day to day basis is the cost of fuel.

By offering employees the choice of an Autogas vehicle, companies can save up to 40 per cent on running costs, which taking a typical bi-fuel vehicle like the Volvo S40 1.8i doing 25,000 miles a year, equates to an annual fuel cost saving of up to £1,408.

Most importantly this reduction in the cost of fuel directly translates to a cut in the cost of private mileage, putting money back into the pocket of the driver and company car tax payer.

With diesel emissions containing harmful Oxides of Nitrogen, particulate matter, Carbon Monoxide and Sulphur Dioxide, diesel car drivers are not as environmentally friendly as they think.

Producing a staggering 30,000 times more particulates than Autogas vehicles, diesel also emits 70 per cent more of the chemical gases that cause smog compared to Autogas.Adding to the unpleasant particluates, Diesel emits 247 times more oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) than Autogas, a key contributor to air pollution, damaging and irritating lungs, causing bronchitis and pneumonia.

As an illustration of the impact of diesel emissions, if all of London’s taxi cabs were converted to run on Autogas, an alarming 3,000 tonnes of soot would no longer be emitted in diesel exhaust fumes.

With Autogas outperforming diesel and petrol on all regulated and non-regulated emissions tests, it is clear that if the environment was to select its own company car, dirty diesel would be at the bottom of the list.

With companies across the country already operating Autogas fleets, the new company car tax presents an opportunity for fleet managers and individuals to clean up by adopting an Autogas fleet strategy.

Those companies operating Autogas fleets are reducing their costs further by installing on-site bulk tank refuelling facilities from Calor Autogas, offering employees the added benefit of convenient refuelling at a reduced cost.

By analysing the true cost, both financial and environmental, of company car ownership, Autogas is clearly the number one fuel choice for company car drivers.
