Calor Launches Preferred Autogas Converters Scheme

Calor is announcing the launch of a network of preferred autogas converters, which will promote high standards of quality in the conversion market and increase confidence among fleet managers who are looking to convert their cars or vans to automotive liquefied petroleum gas (autogas).

The Preferred Installers Scheme will see a developing network of conversion engineers, linked to fleet vehicle dealers and retail refuelling sites, delivering an integrated support package to fleet managers. All preferred installers will be listed on Calor’s web site and, says Calor’s Paul Oxford, it is hoped that 30 conversion specialists will be on board by the end of February.

"Fleet managers can now be confident that they are dealing with converters with the highest level of expertise," he said. "The UK saw the 1,000th retail autogas site opened in December 2001, demonstrating the impressive growth of the autogas infrastructure. This is the next logical step, ensuring consistent standards of work and easier access to advice and support for fleet managers."

To be considered part of the preferred installer network, all converters must already be approved by the LPGA and have links with the main equipment importers or distributors. The conversion equipment must be recognised by Powershift, reassuring fleet managers that some of the cost of conversion can be regained through a grant from the Government body, and converters must have access to full emissions testing on site to ensure that low levels of Nox and particulates are constantly monitored and maintained.

Paul Oxford added that the new initiative was proof that autogas had become an established fuel alternative for fleet managers, and it was fitting that calor, the "driving force" for LPG, should lead the industry in establishing standards. "Fleet managers can see that the arguments for conversion to autogas are clear. Increasing choice in manufacturers’ models, clear cost and environmental benefits, further cost advantages from on site bulk tanks supported by a rapidly expanding retail infrastructure, and now a preferred installer scheme ensuring consistent standards in conversion work, together with advice and support at local level," he added.
